Masks

New York duo Masks is a collaboration between techno producer Patricia (Max Ravitz) and electronic composer Arp (Alexis Georgopoulos).

The two have released two 12” records — Food Plus Drug (II) (Opal Tapes, 2014) and EP2 (Spring Theory, 2019). The unreleased track “Folds I” was included on the Beats In Space 15 year anniversary compilation 3xLP set (BIS/RVNG Intl). The former features artwork by New York painter Matt Connors (detail pictured above) while the latter features artwork by Burkina Faso artist Sanou Oumar.

Though the duo rarely play live, they have played a few notable shows, including a live hardware set on NY’s venerable Beats In Space radio program as well as sharing stages with Max D (Future Times), Matt Werth (RVNG Intl) at NY’s infamous China Chalet. Masks were also invited to play MoMA PS1 twice, first for Sunday Sessions by hosts Confetti System and subsequently performing opening night of the NY Art Book Fair (MoMA PS1).

"Proper fug-house flex from Masks, the new duo of Patricia and Alexis Georgopoulos ov Arp, The Alps a.o. It's dreamiest techno-house soused in ferric noise, pushing deep into the night with the claggy jack of 'Wormhole' parting to the booming kicks and dusty shafts of melody in 'Vapors', alongside an tracky, trancing workout reminding of Legowelt or Xosar in 'Zebra', before easing off the 4/4 kicks for the clipped machine funk flight of 'Fragile Feelings'."

"‘Emotional Response' lives up to it's title's promise, offering a purely blissed-out moment of abandon. Hydraulic-powered, live-recorded 909 lines shuffle and stamp as obsessive piano stabs softly drum their nostaligc hex into the dancers' heads for over seven minutes of a total trip, providing what the label justly calls the "perfect soundrack to a cathartic cry on the dancefloor.' Just let the vibes flow."
